Bate’s Finds Success with South Africa

Despite being just 15 years old, Notre Dame Hounds student-athlete Jacob Bate recently played for the South Africa National Team at the 2025 U20 IIHF World Championships D3B in Thailand.

The four team tournament between Thailand, Luxembourg, Kyrgyzstan and South Africa, took place December 11-14, with South Africa taking home a bronze medal after a 7-6 OT win over Luxembourg.

Bate would set up the tying goal in the third period and the OT winning goal, giving him a tournament best four assists in three games played. He would add one goal to finish with a team high five points, fourth among all skaters.

It was the first time South Africa had won a game in four years at the Worlds (losing 17 in a row during which they were outscored 159-36). Luxembourg has previously beaten South Africa by a combined score of 25-1 in the two games they played against each other in the 2024 Worlds.

The Johannesburg, South Africa forward joined Notre Dame, in Wilcox, SK, for the 2023/24 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) U15 season, tallying 15 points in 22 games. This year he has 7 points in 16 U17 games with NotreDame.

Having previously played on the South Africa U18 team last year recording two points in three games, Bate will once again play on the U18 Team this year.
